Isolation not only leads to divorce, but it also saps the strength from millions of marriages that still appear intact.

Barbara and I feel its dividing tug in our relationship when we have disagreements and misunderstandings. Our busyness repeatedly invites its presence into our marriage.

Like a terminal virus, isolation invades your marriage silently, slowly, and painlessly at first. By the time you become aware of its insidious effects, it can be too late.

Your marriage can be disabled by boredom and apathy, and even die from emotional malnutrition and neglect. When isolation infects a marriage, a husband and a wife exclude each other.

You can share a bed, eat at the same dinner table, watch the same TV, share the same checking account, and parent the same children—and still be alone.

Live together without sharing life. Because of the alarming number of couples in good marriages who are unaware of this problem, I must state forcefully a sobering truth: Every marriage will naturally move toward a state of isolation.

Unless you lovingly, energetically nurture and maintain intimacy in your marriage, you will drift apart from your spouse. The soul was not created to live solo.

The tragedy is that few couples achieve it. Barbara and I have seen this death of hope occur in the marriage of some friends. In many ways their story is typical of many others.

This couple enjoyed dating and were married in their early twenties. After a brief honeymoon, they packed up their belongings and moved to a new city.

On the two-day drive to their new home, they began to notice their differences. She felt alone and apprehensive about their new life together; he felt puzzled that their conversation had dried up so quickly.

Isolation had already begun. She took a demanding job, and he was promoted in his. Busyness and fatigue set in as they moved into the stream of everyday life.

Instead of having companionship, they felt alone. She felt undiscovered, unknown. He felt uncared for. Initially, the birth of their first child seemed to bring them back together.

Later, when she returned to her job, she adjusted her hours to maximize her time with the baby. Life became focused on the child.

Their marriage wore down under the draining influence of isolation. She would bring up a problem. Because their frequent spats became increasingly painful, each retreated and learned to feel safe that way.

Although they seldom missed church, and no one who knew them would have guessed it, isolation had firmly entrenched itself in their marriage.

But at the weekend they recognized they had a problem. They realized they needed to take steps toward oneness as a couple by biblically resolving conflict, listening to each other, and making God the Builder of their home.

As it happened with this young couple, isolation starts when husband and wife slowly drift apart in ways they may not recognize at first.

Completely unrealistic, he had clear connections to the victims, living witnesses who had met and been tricked by 'Tobias' which he never had to answer for.

A really appalling ending. His character is so uneven, the author never really touches on why he wants to play a part in killing these woman, in one sentence he's appalled at the thought of them being tortured and killed but the next he's helping to pick a new victim.

I get its meant to be 'for' his Millicent and because of his relationship with her, but I never felt like it was explained or gone into in enough detail to ever feel believable.

Over all the story started off well and intriguing but by the end I gave it 2 stars and even that felt a bit generous.

I have a lot of things to say about this book, none of them good, pretty much all of it is a spoiler. Some people really enjoyed this book so consider that before deciding to spoil this book's entire plot by reading my ridiculously and uncharacteristically long spoiler below: view spoiler [ Spoiler time!

Seriously, this is going to be long! The story Where do I even begin?! Ok, first off this book is about a husband and wife who decide that murdering women is somehow a turn on and keeps their mar I have a lot of things to say about this book, none of them good, pretty much all of it is a spoiler.

Ok, first off this book is about a husband and wife who decide that murdering women is somehow a turn on and keeps their marriage fun and sexy.

Which on it's own is enough to make me not want to recommend this book because that really skeeved me out despite the fact that there are no explicit sex scenes or murder scenes in this book.

But how did this couple, who have two teenage children no less, get into this sick crime? There's a really long uninteresting backstory so in summary: basically Millicent the 'lovely wife' from the book title manages to get her husband 'TSFP' which stands for That Stupid Fucking Psycho, because this book never gives him a name to kill her sister Holly which is also my name; RIP Holly, you didn't deserve all of that in the name of defending Millicent.

They cover up the sort of accidental murder because TSFP killed her with a tennis racket and she was unarmed and hadn't hurt anyone yet so he was totally going to get jail time for that.

Next, some work friend of Holly's puts two and two together and tries to blackmail TSFP and Millicent into paying her to keep quiet.

But now that they each have a murder under their belts, all of a sudden murdering seems really sexy. So that's when things go from weird to really stupid.

TSFP and Millicent pick out a woman to kill, who happens to like to hike. He apparently never asks any details about what Millicent ended up doing exactly with the murdering and burying.

A year later they both decide to get their murder on again and TSFP goes out trolling for potential victims, disguising himself as a deaf man named Tobias.

He sleeps with one woman, but decides she shouldn't be murdered and then after rejecting another potential murder victim, he finally settles on a woman for them to murder together.

But before they go through with this new murder plan, the body of the hiker is discovered and makes the news because even though she had been missing for a year, she was only dead for a couple of days.

TSFP confronts Millicent about why she has been keeping this woman alive and torturing her for a year without his knowledge and she reveals that it's part of her grand plan to pin the murder on a previous local serial killer who got away - Owen I think, I listened to the audiobook and I can't be bothered to confirm that, so let's call him Owen either way.

Then there was a lot of meandering story later, that mostly involves TSFP being really worried about both his children for various reasons and maybe that was supposed to make us feel sympathetic towards him but I was just bored instead.

So fast forwarding past that, TSFP discovers that Millicent is setting him up to take the whole blame for the hiker and their latest murder victim, plus some other women that he didn't even know Millicent had killed.

Well that should just not happen and how can he leave his children to be raised by this murdering psycho?! Insert WTF face here at this logic So TSFP runs and hides but stays in town so he can try to find some way to 'prove' his quasi innocence or at the very least prove his wife's guilt.

His wife is waiting for him like some cartoon super villain and conveniently implicates her role in the murders while their daughter was, unbeknownst to either of them, listening on.

Daughter confronts Millicent. Son shows up. Epilogue shows that the three of them move somewhere else and ends with TSFP flirting with another woman while again pretending to be someone else who is deaf.

The End. Why this book is even more stupid than it already sounds - Why is TSFP ok with his children being raised by murderers when he was involved, but not when his murdering wife blames everything on him?

Yeah, ok. They weren't even that close of friends. Also, TSFP finds a bottle of eye drops 'hidden' in the pantry but Millicent is allergic to them so it couldn't be for her so why are they in the house?

While TSFP is in hiding, he concludes that Millicent is poisoning their daughter by adding the eye drops to her food to make her feel sick, for no clear reason that was ever given anywhere in this book.

Like, what?!?! Why would she not just assume both of her parents are crazy and run away with her brother and let the police handle it?

That is the evidence that exonerates him, because somehow that means everyone assumes all the DNA must be planted? And no one wonders why the woman who he had sex with and did not murder identified him as Tobias and 'Tobias' was scrawled into the wall by a victim?

He's just found innocent. Oh and Millicent's death was self defense. I think not. Millicent expresses no warmth towards anyone, not even TSFP or their children.

The son is just a generic child who sometimes gets in the way. The daughter is overdramatically upset by the 'returned' serial killer and somehow her stomach aches of all things becomes a big part of the ending.

TSFP's sort of best friend is an idiot like I mentioned before. The lead detective is a caricature of 'hardass woman cop'. Literally none of these characters seemed like real people.

He doesn't exactly come across as a real person, at least not a logical one. I only gave this 2 stars instead of 1 because the writing was not horrific.

Just the entire story pretty much was terrible in my opinion. That actually sounds like a good plan. I'm going to do that. View all comments.

This book was capital T Terrible! This part of your review made me laugh: "I would recommend this book to people to read only if they hate themselves.

Apr 25, Deanna rated it it was amazing Shelves: arcs , highly-recommended , releases. What a read! I had no idea what to expect after reading the description for this novel.

However, I knew I had to read it, and once I started, there was no going back. Dark, disturbing, and so very clever.

This novel really was impossible to put down. The book opens with a man approaching a woman in a bar. He can sense her inner struggle.

Will she stay? She has no idea just how important this decision is. The husband and his wife, Millicent have been married for fifteen years.

They have two teenage children. He teaches tennis and she sells houses. They may not be rich but they are comfortable. They always eat dinner together, and they have regular family movie nights.

They seem like a very happy and normal family. People will do many things to keep a marriage alive. The couple in this novel is no exception.

But the ways they keep their marriage from getting boring? Well, those are VERY different. Full of secrets, lies, and surprises.

I am very excited to see what Samantha Downing comes up with next! I'd like to thank Berkley Publishing for providing me with a copy of this novel.

Be afraid. Be very, very afraid! Next time your neighbor or someone else smiles at you, perhaps you should just look away.

Catching their eye could be extremely dangerous. I cannot believe she just 4. I cannot believe she just did that!

A man and a woman meet, fall in love and marry. Together, they have the wildest and well, most terrifying of hobbies.

For me, reading this was like eating a potato chip. You simply must get your hands on it, like right this second. Beg, borrow or steal if you have to, or maybe just ask nicely, whatever works.

You will not regret it. It is so crazy that it will make me give almost everyone I meet from now on the side-eye, including you! This was a buddy read with Kaceey.

Most of the conversations I had above smiling wickedly, etc. It was totally awesome, thus I highly recommend this for a group read. Thanks so much as always Kaceey!

There's no denying, I'm one tough customer. Or a picky chick as I've so lovingly dubbed myself. Being the lone misfit who can't seem to get in line with a book everyone else is awarding high ratings is proof positive.

At pages in, I have no choice but to jump ship. Or more candidly, I'm bored. Let's be honest though, the chances of that happening are slim. View all 92 comments.

Apr 06, Nilufer Ozmekik rated it really liked it Shelves: best-thriller , wtf-i-just-read. Welcome to your crazy train ride!

Your destination is a suburban town, meet with this lovely family, party of four. A lovely real estate agent wife, a tennis instructor husband and their smart and beautiful kids.

Nope, nothing as it seems. Not Shameless, Weeds tv series kinda dysfunctional. This couple suffers from their daily routines and responsibilities of the their marriage.

As a summary all work no play! But their solution for not being dull is finding an interesting hobby which is organizing the murders of young women.

This book is unconventional with its disturbing characters. Millicent, lovely wife takes her trophy as one of the terrifying, blood freezing, sociopathic characters of the history definitely she is the danger, Walter White is like a Disney character when you compare him with this woman This is brilliant page turner makes you addicted.

You never want to stop and keep on reading. It makes you paranoid, it makes you run in the dark as soon as you turn off the lights, it gives you goosebumps!

Twists are well played. The characterization is developed with so much dark humor and conclusion is surprising.

A promising start! I truly enjoyed it! View all 13 comments. Mar 19, Julie rated it it was amazing Shelves: My Lovely Wife is a Berkley publication.

Sly, witty, and brilliant!! The tile, cover, and intriguing synopsis for this book made it sound too good to pass up- and it was!!

The premise is mostly original, as a husband and wife and their two children enjoy ,what appears on the surface, to be a nice normal, healthy, family life.

However, this married couple, instead of engaging in a little role play to spice up their marriage- indulge in a little murder on the side instead.

The husband, who ne My Lovely Wife is a Berkley publication. The husband, who never reveals his real name, tells this story from a first person perspective, giving us a play by play of events as they unfold, adding all his twisted inner thoughts about what has happened, what is probably happening, what he hopes will happen, and what he is afraid will happen- which is as fascinating as it is horrifying.

Smart, devious, well-constructed, and wildly entertaining!! I loved it! If you love psychological thrillers, you do not want to miss this one!

Relish it and savor it and try not to feel too guilty if you find yourself laughing instead being justly outraged by our narrator and his lovely wife.

This book was almost TOO fun! But, if you love dark humor, twisted and disturbing plots, with loads of surprises, I promise this one will deliver everything you ordered and then some!!

I went into this book blindly and suggest you do the same. It was a big surprise. Millicent and her husband have two children and live in the suburb.

They seem to be a normal family like everyone else in the neighborhood. They get very bored in their fifteen year old marriage, which is very dysfunctional.

They want to thrill their marriage up and they are hiding very dark secrets to keep their marriage alive. This is one crazy thriller.

It will blow your mind. I am utterly in awe. I could not believe this was a debut novel. It lived up to all the hype for me. This has everything that I love in a thriller.

I loved everything about this book. This was my first solid five star for the year. I was immediately drawn into this story.

I could not put this down. Before you open up this book make sure you have no plans for the day.

Don't answer the telephone, and don't answer the door, because all you will want to do is to read this book. I am serious. At least that is how I thought.

I did not want it to end. I raced through this book and read it in a day in a half. I loved the ending. Right when I thought I had figured this one out, a big twist comes along that wasn't expected at all and it left me speechless.

This one kept me on the edge of my seat. This one is tied in first place in my favorite shelf for this year. Crazy good! I loved the character development and I thought it was very well written.

I can't wait to read her next book. This was a Traveling Sister read and I think we all loved it. It was a great discussion. I want to thank Edelweiss, Berkley Books and Samantha Downing for the copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

My name is not Tobias. I use that name only when I want someone to remember me. Fifteen years later, they are hitting a bit of a rough patch but the good news is, they're planning another murder.

But, what his wife doesn't know is that Tobias has been cheating As much as he loves her, he has to admit that sometimes just sometimes he can see dark thoughts flit across her face.

Is it just their anniversary murder? Or does she have something else up her sleeve? This book was WILD. This was a fabulous thriller and I loved figuring out all the pieces of this puzzle.

There were so many moving parts and the wife was soo deliciously evil. I thought "Tobias" was a bit flat and dense of a main character but in all honesty, I think that ended up fitting quite well.

I do wish we spent more time on the grand reveal - we were teased quite a bit about the motives of the earlier couple-killings and when the twist happened, I really wanted more time in that moment.

The ending felt a bit sharp, and wrapped up surprisingly quickly but all in all - this was a really good book. And not one I'll soon forget! View all 19 comments.

I just loved the tone! The dark humor had me laughing and smiling at some really inappropriate moments. These are characters that a reader should hate, and while the wife is depicted as being cold, there is something just so sympathetic about the husband.

He is quite the clever narrator! While predicted one twist early on, I had no clue has to how things were going to play out.

I tell her a story that has nothing to do with being deaf. I tell her about my childhood pet, a frog named Sherman. He was a bullfrog who sat on the biggest rock in the pond and hogged all the flies.

I never tried to catch Sherman; I would just watch him, and sometimes he watched me, too. We liked to sit together, and I started calling him my pet.

I shrug. One day the rock was empty. Never saw him again. Petra says this is sad. I never had to do that. I just imagined he went to a bigger pond with more flies.

She likes this and tells me so. I do not tell her everything about Sherman. For instance, he had a long tongue that darted around so fast I could hardly see it, but I always wanted to grab it.

I used to sit by the pond and wonder how bad of a thought that was. And would it hurt him? If he died, would it be murder? Petra tells me about her cat, Lionel, who is named after her childhood cat, also named Lionel.

She shows me pictures. Lionel is a tuxedo cat, with a face divided between black and white. He is too stark to be cute. She continues to talk and shifts to her work.

The brand becomes more important than the product. She nods. It is the least exciting profession in the world, but it is solid, stable, and something a deaf guy can easily do.

The bartender comes over. He is neat and clean, college-aged. Petra takes charge of the ordering, and it is because I am deaf.

Women always think I need to be taken care of. They like to do things for me because they think I am weak. Petra secures us two more drinks and a fresh bowl of snacks, and she smiles like she is proud of herself.

It makes me laugh. Silently, but still a laugh. She leans toward me and puts her hand on my arm. Leaves it there. She has forgotten I am not her ideal man, and our progression is now predictable.

The decision is easier than it should be, though not because I find her particularly attractive. It is the choice.

She gives me the power to decide, and right now I am a man who says yes. Petra lives downtown, close to the bar, in the middle of all the big branding signs.

There is clutter everywhere: papers and clothes and dishes. It makes me think she loses her keys a lot.

Hiding, probably. She flits around, dropping her bag in one place and removing her shoes in another. Two glasses appear, filled with red wine, and she leads me into the bedroom.

She turns to face me, smiling. Petra has become more attractive—even her plain hair seems to sparkle.

Petra is attractive enough. She presses up against me, her body warm, her breath soaked in wine. She takes the glass out of my hand and puts it down.

I do not finish drinking it until much later, when we are in the dark and the only light is from my phone. We type back and forth, making fun of ourselves and the fact that we do not know each other.

I ask: Favorite color? Lime green. Ice cream? Bubble gum. Bubble gum? The blue stuff? Who says that? French vanilla. Pizza topping?

Are we? Wait, are we still talking about pizza? We are not talking about pizza. Afterward, she dozes off first. I think about leaving, then about staying, and the idea bounces around so long I doze off.

I slip out of the bed without waking Petra. She is sleeping facedown, one leg askew and her hair spread out on the pillow.

I do not have to. On the nightstand, her earrings. They are made of colored glass, a swirl of blue shades, and they look like her eyes.

After getting dressed, I slip the earrings into my pocket. I take them to remind myself not to do this again.

I almost believe it will work. I walk toward the front door without looking back. I hear her because I am not deaf. And I keep moving.

It is only then that I stop and wonder how she figured it out. I must have slipped. What is your first impression of the narrator and of Millicent?
